Fraudulent email & Bagle/Beagle virus

SUBJECT: Urgent Virus Alert
Dear SBC Internet Services Customer,
Some Members have received email claiming to be from their SBC Internet Services domain (i.e., ameritech.net, sbcglobal.net, prodigy.net, etc.) under a “spoofed” company alias (e.g., management, administration, support, etc). Reportedly, the content of the email advises you of virus risks and to open an attachment to address that concern. Here is an example of the fraudulent email:
Subject: Notify about your email account utilization
From: management@sbcglobal.net
Message Content:
Hello user of Sbcglobal.net email server. We warn you about some attacks on your email account. Your computer may contain viruses, in order to keep your computer and email account safe, please, follow the instructions. Advanced details can be found in attached file. Best wishes, The Sbcglobal.net team. http://www.sbcglobal.net
You should delete this email immediately and not open the attachment.
This email did
not come from SBC or any of its affiliates. It is the result of the W32.Bagle.K
virus. SBC Internet Services is taking action to block further messages from
reaching our Members, and we will continue working diligently to ensure that
your experience with us is both safe and enjoyable.
Virus Info:
Bagle (a.k.a. Beagle) Win32.Bagle (alternate versions of the worm are designated as Bagle.J, Bagle.K, etc.) is a mass-mailing worm that infects computers via email and file sharing in the form of an executable file (.exe) or a password-protected compressed file (.zip). Once installed on a computer, Bagle scans local files on your hard drive and sends itself to all email addresses it finds. This could result in numerous infected files on the hard drive of each infected computer.
To help protect your computer:
- Do not open files from senders you do not know.
- Ensure that any retrieved files are scanned by your antivirus software.
- Scan your computer for viruses on a weekly basis and maintain continuous,
up-to-date antivirus protection.
