Windows NT 4.0: Configuring Remote Access Setup and Dial-up Networking
Please note that before you can create a Dial -Up connection using NT 4.0, the Remote Access Services component must be installed on your system.
A) Creating a Dialup Phonebook Entry
- Open ‘Dial-up Networking’ icon by opening the My Computer icon.
- A prompt to add a ‘New Phonebook Entry’ will appear. Click OK to launch the 'Create New Phonebook Entry’ wizard.
If the Wizard does not launch automatically, click on ‘Create a New Phone Book Entry’.
- Give the entry a name.
- Place a check in the ‘I know all about phonebook entries’ checkbox, and click the Finish button.
The Phonebook entry configuration screen will appear. You can get back to this screen to perform modifications later by choosing More and ‘Edit entry and modem properties’ from the ‘Dial-up Networking Screen’.
B) Configuring the Phonebook Entry
Some of the default settings may need to be modified for each of the following tabs:
BASIC tab:
- Place a check in ‘Use Telephony Dialing Properties’
- Enter the local access number and area code where specified.
- Click the Configure button next to the modem entry.
- Set the Initial Speed as appropriate for your modem or close to its actual speed.
- Enter a check mark next to 'Enable hardware flow control’ unless your modem is set differently.
- Select other settings as needed for your modem, then click OK. Leave the settings as default when unsure.
SERVER tab:
- Select the Dial-Up Server type ‘PPP, Windows 95, Internet’
- TCP/IP should be checked for Network Protocols.
- Enable Software Compression
- Disable PPP LCP extensions.
- Click the TCP/IP Settings button.
- Select ‘Server assigned IP address’
- Select ‘Server assigned name server addresses’.
- Select ‘Use IP header compression’
- Select ‘Use default gateway on remote computer’.
SCRIPT tab:
You do not need a script to log on to NBI. Leave this screen set to ‘none’.
SECURITY tab:
Check the option for ‘Accept any authentication, including clear text’.
X-25 tab:
Choose "none" from the pull-down menu.
Click OK to exit and save the entries.
C) Connecting to the Internet
- From My Computer, open Dial-Up Networking.
- Select your Internet connection from the pull-down menu, then click the Dial button.
- You will be prompted with a ‘Connect to’ dialog box. Enter your user name and password. You may also want to check Save Password. Leave the domain field blank. Remember, passwords are case-sensitive.
If you need to change or remove the password later, click the ‘Unsave Password’ button on the Security tab of the ‘Edit entry and modem properties’ screen.
- Click OK when you are ready to connect. Your modem will dial, authenticate and log onto the network.
D) Making a Shortcut to the Connection
- Open Dial-up Networking
- Click the More button and choose 'Create Shortcut to Entry'.
- A dialog box will appear allowing you to place the Shortcut in the Desktop directory by default. Click OK.
