Configuring Outlook Express for Use with Mac OS 8.5

This document will assist you with the configuration of Outlook Express as supplied with Mac OS 8.5. This configuration has been tested successfully with our service. If you have any difficulties with Outlook Express, please contact Apple for assistance, as Nevada Bell Internet technical support is limited to the software we distribute.   1. To view, send and receive mail, open the "Mail" icon on your desktop.

  2. The first time you open Outlook Express you will be presented with a prompt asking if you would like to import message and contacts from other applications. Press "No".

  3. You will be presented with a screen welcoming you to Outlook Express. Press "OK".

  4. Select "Accounts", then "E-mail" from the dropdown list to the left. Use the Nevada Bell Internet network settings listed below to make sure that the shown E-mail Preferences are correct for your account.

    Full Name: Your name

    E-mail address: UserID@nvbell.net (for example, jsmith@nvbell.net)

    Organization: Nevada Bell Internet

    SMTP server: mail.nvbell.net

    Account ID: Your UserID (for example, jsmith)

    POP Server: postoffice.nvbell.net

    Password: Enter your e-mail password and put a checkmark in the box to the left to save it. Leave checkmark off if you wish to enter your password each time you check your mail.

    Account name: postoffice.nvbell.net

    News (NNTP) Server: news.la.sbcglobal.net or news.sf.sbcglobal.net

  5. Select "News". Type in news.la.sbcglobal.net or news.sf.sbcglobal.net for both your "Server name" and "Server address".

  6. Select "Network", then "Protocol Helpers". Select "https" from the "Protocol" column and press "Change".

  7. Press "Choose Helper".

  8. Locate Netscape Navigator on your hard drive. If the MacOS 8.5 installer installed it, it will be located along the following path (assuming your hard drive is named "Macintosh HD"):

Note: If you did not install the Netscape Navigator software during your installation of MacOS 8.5, you will need to install it from the MacOS 8.5 CD.

If you need to modify these settings at a later time, you can get to this Preferences window by selecting "Preferences..." from the Edit menu.
